Homogenization is done to reduce chemical segregation that comes from the casting process. It is also known as diffusion annealing. It is carried out at temperatures high enough as to induce the diffusion of alloying elements. This comes with the drawback of a coarse grain structure. Consequently, it is often followed by heat treatments such as annealing, normalizing and tempering.
